Big changes are ahead—I’m planning to move to Pullman, Washington! Nestled in the rolling hills of the Palouse region, Pullman is a small but vibrant college town that's home to Washington State University (WSU). As I prepare for this transition, I’ve been doing some digging to figure out what life might be like in this charming town. Here’s what I’ve learned—and what I’m expecting.
The first thing you should know about Pullman: WSU is the heart of the town. With a population around 30,000 (including students), a lot of the community life, local events, and economy revolve around the university.
Whether you're a student, faculty, or just living in town, you’ll feel the Cougar pride everywhere—from maroon-and-gray gear in local shops to game day buzz around town.
Expect: Friendly, laid-back people and a community that loves to support local events and businesses.
Pullman generally offers more affordable housing than big cities. You’ll find everything from student apartments to cozy single-family homes.
However, since it’s a university town:
Rentals can fill up fast before the semester starts
Some neighborhoods may get noisy on weekends or game days
Tip: If you’re moving in the summer or before fall, start your housing search early!
Pullman experiences all four seasons:
☀️ Summers are sunny and dry
🍂 Fall is crisp and colorful
❄️ Winters bring snow, ice, and real cold
🌱 Spring comes with rolling green hills
Be prepared for winter driving and invest in proper outerwear—but don’t worry, the snowy hills are stunning.
Nature lovers, rejoice! Pullman is surrounded by gorgeous countryside and outdoor options:
Hike Kamiak Butte or Steptoe Butte
Walk or bike the Bill Chipman Trail
Explore the scenic Palouse region
📸 This area is a dream for photographers and those who love road trips through wide open spaces.
Pullman offers a peaceful, slower lifestyle—but it’s far from boring. Thanks to the university and local community, you’ll find:
🎭 Theater productions
🧺 Farmers markets
🎉 Local festivals (like the quirky Lentil Festival)
🏈 Sports events and campus energy
Need a city break? Spokane is ~2 hours away, and Moscow, ID is just 15 minutes.
Pullman is known for its welcoming, small-town vibe:
People wave and smile
Locals are helpful and kind
Conversations still happen in line at the grocery store
It’s a place where community still matters—and that’s something I’m really looking forward to.
As I pack my things and plan this big move, I’m feeling excited, hopeful, and ready for a new pace of life.
Pullman seems like a town with:
A strong sense of place
A deep connection to education
A beautiful, natural setting
And genuinely good people
It won’t be like the city life I’m used to—but that’s exactly why I’m going.
Here’s to new adventures, rolling hills, and Coug spirit.
Pullman, I’m ready for you!
