COAST Transportation and Asotin County Community Services recently announced that they had been granted funding from the Dan Thompson Memorial Fund, which will allow them to provide free rides to individuals with developmental disabilities living in Asotin, Garfield, and Whitman Counties. This funding will help COAST Transportation to expand their hours and provide rides to those with developmental disabilities on weekends and weekdays.
Cynthia Tierney, the director at Asotin County Community Services in Clarkston, commented that “transportation is important to all of us,” and that they are “thrilled to have COAST partner with us to provide increased independence and inclusivity for our developmentally disabled population.”
Currently, many people with developmental disabilities rely on friends or family to get around, but these options limit their mobility. Now, with this generous grant from the Dan Thompson Memorial Fund, individuals have the opportunity to go shopping, get to medical appointments, or even go to the movies on their own schedule.
To request a ride, call (509) 397-2935. A 48-hour notice is typically required. Additionally, anyone interested in being a volunteer driver can contact Craig VanTine at (800) 967-2899.
