The Fort Russell Historic District is Moscow's oldest intact residential neighborhood, a walkable grid just west and south of downtown and a short distance from the University of Idaho. Homes are early period houses in Queen Anne, bungalow, Greek Revival, and other styles, built mostly between the 1870s and 1940s. Buying here means an older home with character and a strong location, and it may also mean exterior changes go through the city's historic review, which is worth confirming before you make an offer.

The district was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and expanded in 2017. Landmark buildings in or near the district include the McConnell Mansion, the 1912 Center, and a historic Methodist church. Because the homes are old, budget for the maintenance older houses need and get a thorough inspection.

Compared with student rental blocks closer to campus, it is a quieter owner-occupied neighborhood. Buyers often weigh it against the area around East City Park, which has a similar era of homes without the formal historic district designation.
